Increased Resignation Rates in March

Industries across the board reported staggering increased resignation rates in March. According to StaffingHub, March saw an industry high of the number of individuals leaving their jobs. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed 4.5 million resignations, a 152,000 increase in February’s 4.4 million.

The industries that did see increased resignation rates in March include:

  • Retail Trade
  • Professional and Business Services
  • Finance and Insurance
  • Durable Goods Manufacturing
  • Nondurable Goods Manufacturing

Additionally, some industries did see a decline in the number of job openings. These include:

  • Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities
  • Accommodation and Food Services
  • State and Local Education
  • Wholesale Trade
  • Health Care and Social Assistance

For the above professions, retail trade had the most significant number of job openings in March, while nondurable goods manufacturing and health care and social assistance are the two professions that had the least steep change in the decrease or increase of job openings.

Since March of last year, net employment has increased, with 77.7 million hires and 71.4 million separations (i.e. quits, layoffs, discharges, etc.). This increase amounted for a net employment gain of 6.3 million over last year.
